Andy Robertson was heavily linked with a summer transfer to Atletico Madrid during the 2025 transfer window, with the Spanish giants making the Liverpool left-back their primary defensive target as they sought to replace departing players Reinildo Mandava and Cesar Azpilicueta.

The interest from Diego Simeone’s side emerged in mid-June.

The timing was significant, as Liverpool were simultaneously closing in on the £40-50 million signing of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.

Robertson was reportedly keen on the move to La Liga, with initial talks between the clubs getting underway.

However, the transfer ultimately collapsed due to financial disagreements between the clubs.

Liverpool demanded a minimum fee of £5 million for their vice-captain, who had one year remaining on his contract, while Atletico Madrid were hoping to secure either a free transfer or pay only a nominal fee.

When asked post-Burnley if there had been a chance he could have been playing against Liverpool for Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, Andy Robertson admitted that the prospect of a transfer was a possibility:

“Maybe at one point,” he admitted as quoted by the Scottish Herald.

“I do want to play games and be the starting left-back and I have got to keep pushing to try to produce the levels I know I can do.”

“The international break was good for me as I was able to get two 90 minutes, get that match fitness and two really good results for Scotland and I took a lot of confidence from that.”

Meanwhile, Kerkez’s afternoon at Turf Moor unraveled quickly after he was booked for simulation in the 22nd minute.

The situation deteriorated further when Kerkez fouled Jaidon Anthony in midfield ten minutes later, prompting Arne Slot to withdraw him after just 38 minutes.

However, Andy Robertson leapt to the defence of his understudy:

“He (Kerkez) is only young and I think we forget that?

You try to help them as much as you can but you want to put pressure on them and you want to play games.”

“He will be the starting left-back for Liverpool in the future and it’s up to me to push him this season and help him improve,” the vice-captain said.

“He just needs to keep working hard and not let today affect him, which it won’t as he’s a confident lad, and I’ll help him as much as I can.”
