Andy Robertson said that he knew he would have a battle on his hands to get regular minutes at Liverpool this season.

The Scotland international was named in a starting line-up for the first time this campaign on Wednesday, as the Reds hosted Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Milos Kerkez, a big-money summer signing from Bournemouth, started in each of Liverpool's opening four Premier League games, with Robertson having to be content with a place on the bench.

Robertson was called upon earlier than he would have expected at Burnley on Sunday, as he replaced Kerkez in the first half, with Arne Slot keen to avoid a red card for his side after Kerkez was booked amid a shaky start at Turf Moor.

Robertson was confirmed as Liverpool's vice-captain last month after a summer which saw him linked with a move way from the club — coincidentally to Atletico — and he was asked how happy he was to be heading into Anfield's home dressing room rather than the away one ahead of kick-off.

"Anfield nights are special, I'm very lucky that I've been here eight years now," Robertson told TNT Sports ahead of Liverpool's game against Atletico.

"There have been some amazing games and amazing nights here, hopefully the same tonight.

We had a good league campaign last season and we need to get off to a good start to guarantee a place in the last 16."

Robertson admitted it has been tough to get used to being a regular substitute for Liverpool, having virtually been a guaranteed starter when fit since joining the Reds from Hull in 2017.

"It's been difficult but the communication with the manager and the coaches has been good," Robertson said.

"We've always kept a good relationship

I knew the start of the season was going to be difficult, but I knew if I kept doing what I was doing I'd hopefully get my chance
