Andy Robertson has responded to Florian Wirtz to Liverpool with the German international widely expected to don the red shirt next season.
The club is close to finalising a seismic deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, with the transfer fee set to eclipse the current British record at €150 million (about £126.4 million).
While there have been differing reports about whether a verbal agreement is already in place between the two clubs, all signs point to the move being in its final stages.
Now Andy Robertson has weighed in on the reports and explained how impressed he was with the 22-year-old during the European Championships last summer.
Speaking to Sky Sports as part of a charity golf day for his AR26 foundation, the Scot gave his view:
“He was excellent against us [Scotland vs Germany], I do remember that and I remember that game was extremely tough for us,” Robertson said.
“He was excellent, he was the one causing us problems, in the half-spaces, running in behind, so I haven’t seen too much of him but I have played against him and that was enough for me to see he was going to be a top player.”
“Obviously we played Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League as well and we dominated that game a bit more and made it difficult but certainly in the German team against us, he was excellent.”
“We’re certainly linked with him, that is for sure, you can’t miss it and not see it.
“But if we get it through then an exciting one in and we have a lot of exciting talent in there.”
“He is a right good player and he will help us and if he does get through the door then it’s exciting.”
