Andy Robertson has predicted that Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni have “great futures” ahead of them in a summer where the Liverpool youngsters have enhanced their status in the Liverpool first-team squad.
The duo have started all three pre-season matches and have looked comfortable alongside the Reds’ all-star squad.
Ngumoha, in particular, has been one of the standout performers in the friendly games and has carried a repeated threat in the wing areas.
On Saturday, against AC Milan, the 16-year-old set up Dominik Szoboszlai’s first-half strike.
The Scotland captain said he can see improvements this summer alone.
“He’s a good kid and he’s got a fantastic head on his shoulders, and especially when he’s got people like Mo Salah who can help him so much as well,” Robertson told The Anfield Wrap after Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan.
“We always try to help him and Trey [Nyoni], they’re so young but they’re such good kids and they have got a hell of a future ahead of themselves.
“You can just see them coming on [improving] every time and the more they train and play with us, the more they just get better and better.
“Obviously that’s the last two games I’ve played now with Rio in front of me and he just keeps on coming on and he’s got a great future ahead of him but the here and now looks pretty good as well.”
With Luis Diaz closing in on a move to Bayern Munich, it begs the question of what role Ngumoha will play this season
Last term, Ngumoha made just one senior appearance and was only named in three senior matchday squads
With reports that Liverpool could reinvest the Diaz fee into the signing of Alexander Isak - a central forward - it could leave the squad short of natural wingers.
Just Salah and Cody Gakpo could remain if Federico Chiesa leaves as expected, meaning Ngumoha may have an important role to play as back-up.
But it’s a decision that looms for Arne Slot over the coming weeks, and for the club as it plots the final weeks of the transfer market.
Likewise, Nyoni, who signed a long-term contract this summer, is also expected to play a more senior role this term, although the Reds are well stocked in midfield.
