Andy Robertson has wished his Liverpool teammate good luck after the club confirmed a departure ahead of the transfer deadline.

Robertson is a modern-day Liverpool legend for his impressive exploits in some highly successful years as a club since his £10million [BBC] move from Hull City in 2017.

The Scottish international has proven himself as one of the best bargains in the Reds’ history over the last eight years, yet age is not on his side anymore and he has seen serious competition for his left-back spot arrive this summer with Milos Kerkez moving to Liverpool from Bournemouth.

Football Insider revealed in June that Liverpool were weighing up whether to let Robertson leave this summer, amid interest in his signature from Atletico Madrid, and Slot has fuelled exit rumours by preferring to start Kerkez in each of the Reds’ first two Premier League games so far.

Robertson would prefer to join Atletico rather than stay in the Premier League if he leaves the Reds, as revealed to Football Insider by former scout Mick Brown, and he has now sent a heartfelt message after an Anfield departure was confirmed.

Robertson remains a Liverpool player for now, but the club have moved to let young midfielder James McConnell depart ahead of the deadline after he signed a new contract and joined Ajax on loan for the season [Liverpool].

The 20-year-old took to Instagram on Friday (29 August) to post a series of pictures of him signing for the club, and he shared his joy at the move with a caption saying: “Very happy to be here for the season, can’t wait to get started.”

Football Insider verdict

While anything can happen in football and things do change in an instant, it would certainly be a shock to see Robertson leave Merseyside this late in the transfer window after staying for the majority of the summer.

His individual form has dropped off in the last two seasons compared to previous campaigns, but he was still a pivotal part of Liverpool’s first Premier League triumph under Slot, and certainly can not be written off just yet.

The 31-year-old still featured 45 times in all competitions in 2024/25, despite being rotated with Kostas Tsimikas at times, and it has still felt premature to say he should leave the club just because Kerkez has joined.

Robertson was appointed as Liverpool’s vice captain on Friday (29 August), while Greece international Tsimikas is set to join Roma on loan for the season [Fabrizio Romano], so he is seemingly very likely to be staying at the club for at least another campaign.
