Liverpool’s match-day buzz could soon spill onto a transformed high street after city planners launched a public survey for a £5 million upgrade around Anfield stadium.
The consultation, announced on Monday, invites residents to weigh in on a blueprint designed to turn the Walton Breck Road corridor into a pedestrian-friendly hub that stitches the famous ground more tightly into its surrounding community.
For years, fans have funnelled through the same narrow pavements and cramped bus stops en route to the Kop.
City leaders now say those pinch points are holding back local businesses and dampening the area’s post-pandemic revival.
Yet officials are keeping their cards close: detailed artist impressions and construction timelines remain under wraps while feedback rolls in.
The Liverpool City council have now asked residents to make their feelings known on the regen plans:
“Liverpool residents are being invited to have their say about a £5m scheme to transform the area around Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield stadium,” read a government statement.
“The proposed improvements are part of a wider regeneration effort under the Anfield Spatial Regeneration Framework (SRF) and aim to create a greener, safer, and more inclusive high street.”
According to the SRF, the scheme focuses on three pillars:
Greener Streets: Mature trees, rain-garden planters, and eco-friendly lighting aim to soften Walton Breck Road’s hard edges, cutting noise and improving air quality.
Safer Crossings: Relocated zebra crossings and raised junctions should slow match-day traffic, giving priority back to pedestrians and cyclists.
Smarter Parking: Reconfigured bays and digital signage promise to reduce gridlock and keep kerbs clear for local buses, ride-shares, and emergency vehicles.
The survey will remain live for six weeks, with paper copies available at Anfield Library and several local cafés.
Once processed, feedback will inform a final design package expected to hit the planning portal by early December.
If approved, construction could start as soon as April 2026, slotting between Liverpool’s home fixtures to minimise disruption.
Cllr Dan Barrington, cabinet member for Transport and Connectivity, said:
‘This £5m investment in Walton Breck Road is about more than just infrastructure – it’s about creating a safer, greener, and more welcoming environment for everyone who lives, works, and visits Anfield.”
“These improvements will help knit together the community, support local businesses, and ensure the area continues to thrive as part of our long-term regeneration plans.”
