Ange Postecoglou might already be on thin ice at Nottingham Forest after a shock League Cup exit to Swansea City in light of Evangelos Marinakis’ reputation.

Postecoglou and Nottingham Forest were mocked after their 3-2 defeat to Swansea City in the League Cup on 17 September.

The Australian has endured a woeful start to life at the City Ground with new Nottingham Forest signing Douglas Luiz making his debut for the club against the Swans on a blustery and wet night in Wales.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara felt that Postecoglou did not deserve the Nottingham Forest job and his opinion has already been proved right after the ex-Celtic boss crumbled at the first chance to boost chances of claiming silverware.

Previous Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan believes owner Marinakis will not be considering sacking the manager any time soon despite the cup exit.

Speaking on talkSPORT (18 September), co-presenters Jordan and Jim White clashed over how the Greek owner will treat the Australian manager moving forward after a disappointing defeat in the League Cup.

The former chairman highlighted that Marinakis likely isn’t fussed about the end of a potential cup run for the Garibaldis, saying: “I don’t think it matters to Marinakis the League Cup… about how irrelevant the League Cup is in the great scheme of things with bigger tournaments to have because he’s got a Europa League.

“Europa League is what Marinakis, I believe, wants to win and I’ve said that from the outset which they’ve [Nottingham Forest] seen what happened last year.

What does he get if they win the League Cup?

“I think at this moment in time Marinakis is drawing up his dismissal notice.

Silly, we’re being silly, the League Cup is not a big thing.

“It’s a big thing if you’re a Newcastle and it’s a big thing if you’re part of the media but it’s not a big thing.

“It won’t be a big thing for Marinakis.

I’m pretty sure that Marinakis will take it [the defeat] with a pinch of salt.”

Whilst the Australian will likely receive the kindness of his boss after the calamitous defeat in the League Cup.

Despite being a trigger-happy owner, Marinakis will not be panicking after two games with Postecoglou.

As Jordan alluded to, the focus for Forest and the reason why they appointed the ex-Spurs boss in the first place is to win the Europa League.

The Lilywhites became the unlikely victors last season and there is no doubt that the new Garibaldi head coach has the potential to replicate the same feat this campaign.

Indeed, the domestic form may be sacrificed in the first place but Marinakis is perceived as a gung-ho owner who wants trophies and nothing less.

Postecoglou will not be sweating just yet but he will also be totally aware of the repercussions he could face if he fails to bring European glory to the City Ground come the end of the season.
