Liverpool’s midfield shortlist this past summer featured a notable name in the Bundesliga: VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller.

Though plenty of rumours swirled, the Reds ultimately ended the window without securing the 24-year-old deep-lying playmaker.

Liverpool were touted as candidates to trigger Stiller’s release clause—widely reported at around €40–50 million—after monitoring his performances in Stuttgart’s engine room.

Local newspaper Stuttgarter Nachrichten suggested over the summer that the Reds had “serious interest” in the German international.

Stiller has also been linked to the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid.

However, speaking in an interview with German outlet BILD, the Stuttgart stalwart has asserted he is not looking for a move before the World Cup in the USA next year:

“I’m not currently thinking about moving,” he said.

“I’ve discussed it with my management that this is out of the question for me right now.”

“I’m a regular and leading player here (for Stuttgart)?

The most important thing for my development is that I get my minutes—especially in a World Cup year.”

“I definitely didn’t want to jeopardize the World Cup.”

However, the midfielder has admitted that Wirtz’s decision to make the switch to Anfield was “cool”, and that he can envisage himself moving abroad as well:

“Basically, I’m attracted to moving abroad at some point,” Stiller said.

“I thought Florian Wirtz’s decision to go to Liverpool was cool.”

“One thing is clear to me: At the end of my career, I absolutely want to play in the USA, in the MLS

This plan, this goal, is 100 percent.”

It’s clear that Stiller will be snapped up by a bigger club sooner rather than later.

And while Liverpool’s midfield options are strong, there is always space for more quality.
