Anthony Gordon has revealed the extent of his injury after he went off with an ankle issue in Newcastle’s latest pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid.
Newcastle’s stellar 2024/25 domestic campaign means they are back in the Champions League for next season, and speedy winger Gordon once again played a key part in their success.
Football Insider recently revealed that Liverpool have been told it would take an offer of £75-80million to sign Gordon, amid interest in his signature, with Newcastle unwilling to sell him this summer due to their lack of PSR concerns.
The Magpies have had a tough summer so far with Alexander Isak soon set to leave and numerous targets having slipped through their fingers, and Football Insider revealed in July that the Reds are still interested in a move to sign Gordon in the latter stages of the window.
If he does remain at St James’ Park, the England international is sure to be a key man for the club going forward, but Newcastle fans’ worst fears looked to have been realised after he was struck by injury ahead of the new season on Saturday (9 August).
Gordon had to go off towards the end of Newcastle’s pre-season clash against Atletico on Saturday, with instant concerns over his hamstring and ankle, and the new Premier League campaign just one week away.
Eddie Howe revealed following the game that the “initial feeling” was that Gordon would be fine, and the 24-year-old confirmed that he was fine on his Instagram story after the friendly, posting a picture of him playing with the caption: “Just twisted my ankle, no problems.
Glad to be back home,” and: “Business time next…”

Football Insider verdict
Gordon was born in Liverpool and is believed to be a boyhood Reds fan, and they should definitely make a genuine play to sign him soon, especially after Luis Diaz was sold to Bayern Munich, with the Colombian leaving a clear gap on the left side of Arne Slot’s attack.
Gordon registered nine goals and seven assists in 42 games in all competitions last season, which is less than Diaz’ 17 strikes and eight assists in 50 games, yet bringing him in instead of the Barracas-born winger for little overall outlay would represent great business by Liverpool.

The England international is homegrown, much younger, and the exact type of winger that Slot needs right now to complement the likes of Florian Wirtz and Mo Salah, as he is direct and very quick over short distances, while he also wants to be at Liverpool, unlike Diaz.
Newcastle’s likely stubbornness in negotiations to sell him could well prove to be a major stumbling block in getting him to Anfield, but attempting to sign him is definitely worth a try from Liverpool’s point of view, especially while a deal for Isak also progresses ahead of the new campaign.
