Newcastle star Anthony Gordon has issued a 'sincere apology' for his red card against Liverpool - which Alan Shearer had no arguments with.

Gordon, 24, caught the back of Virgil van Dijk's calf with his studs as he attempted to close down Liverpool's captain during Monday's Premier League clash.

The England international was initially shown a yellow card before a VAR check took place with just seconds of the first half remaining.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe thought that Gordon was 'slightly unlucky' to be shown a red card after watching one replay of the challenge before the start of the second half.

"I think there's no intent and he's gone in, of course, probably too quickly," Howe said post-match.

"I think he's tried to pull out and not commit any damage to Virgil as he's gone in to slide.

It's an unfortunate one, I think he's slightly unlucky with it.
