Anthony Gordon has commented on Alexander Isak and Liverpool.

Anthony Gordon has predicted that Newcastle United will become 'better' as a result of the ongoing Alexander Isak transfer saga.

Liverpool remain linked to Sweden striker Isak, approaching the final two weeks of the transfer window.

However, as the ECHO understands at present there is no plan to follow up on the £110m offer that Newcastle rejected at the start of August.

Isak is reportedly pushing to make the move and, therefore, has been exiled from Eddie Howe's squad.

That meant he was absent for the Magpies' opening fixture against Aston Villa.

Newcastle might have created a vastly superior 16 attempts on goal - to their opposition's three - during the 90 minutes at Villa Park, but the match ended 0-0 and continued a worrying trend.

According to Opta, without Isak they have failed to win any of their last six Premier League matches without the 25-year-old involved, drawing four and losing two.

Gordon himself has experience being embroiled in a Liverpool transfer saga.

Last summer, the 24-year-old almost made the switch to Anfield for £75m - but Newcastle ultimately managed to sell fringe players, negating the need for a big-money departure to help comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

He ended up staying and signed a new contract, reported to be until 2030.

On the Isak saga, Gordon added: "It has been difficult, because we're such a tight knit group.

"For that to almost...

we've never had any problems publicly and so for that being the first thing to have happened, it's a test of us.

"But, you see today, we've still got that spirit, we've still got that togetherness.

"We work on it every day, it's never going to go regardless of individuals, so we're a top group.

"Our togetherness is top and it always will be."

Asked if the saga will help improve existing togetherness, Gordon predicted: "It can do but, like I said, we're still together anyway.

"I think things like this can test you, make you better in the end, I think that's going to be the case."

Next up for Liverpool is, incidentally, a match-up with Newcastle on Monday night.

"With everything that's going on, I'm sure the atmosphere is going to be a bit wild," Gordon said with a smile.

"I'm just excited to see the home fans again, get back in the stadium and it's going to be a top game."
