Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season, but they certainly earned every bit of their 3-2 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park on Monday night.

What appeared to be a comfortable evening for the champions turned into a heart-stopping finale that showcased both the resilience of Eddie Howe’s side and the clinical edge that separates title contenders from the rest.

The drama reached its peak deep into stoppage time when 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, making his Premier League debut, swept home the winner in the 100th minute to break Newcastle hearts

At just 16 years and 361 days old, Ngumoha became Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer, capping off one of the most memorable debuts in recent memory.

The Magpies’ task became infinitely harder when Gordon was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk just before halftime, though Hugo Ekitike doubled Liverpool’s advantage within 20 seconds of the restart.

And the Newcastle striker has taken to Instagram to apologise for his red card, and reserved a special apology to the Liverpool skipper:

“I want to sincerely apologise to my teammates and the fans,” Gordon wrote on Instagram

“My intentions were pure.

I was just trying to create energy in the game and I mistimed the tackle.

I also want to apologise to Virgil, I would never intend to tackle somebody like this on purpose.”

“We spoke after and he knows that.”

“More importantly, I’m so proud of the time I spent on the pitch and how we played tonight.”

“The atmosphere from you all is what makes SJP so special.
