Many Liverpool fans will be familiar with the Anthony Gordon saga of last summer.
Newcastle United, under severe pressure to comply with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), explored selling some of their prized assets before the June 30 PSR deadline.
This led to Newcastle offering Gordon to Liverpool in a deal that could have seen Joe Gomez move in the opposite direction.
However, negotiations ultimately broke down when Newcastle shifted their financial strategy.
Rather than losing their star England winger, they instead sold Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, raising enough money to avoid PSR sanctions and allowing them to retain Gordon.
Now Craig Hope has interviewed the 23-year-old, with Gordon admitting that it was a difficult situation to process at the time.
“It’s true, that was the case,” he said in regard to struggles getting his head in a good space after the Liverpool speculation.
‘I would never lie.
With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window.
It didn’t happen.
“I had to get my head around that to begin with (thinking he was going), and then to get my head around it again (when it didn’t happen) was hard.”
“I’m a human being.
That is why I understand what Alex is going through.
He will be going through a lot.”
“The club is going through a lot?
I hope everyone gets what they want in the end.”
