Cypriot side Apollon Limassol have added experience to their squad ahead of the new season.

The club is looking to strengthen both domestically and in Europe, and their latest signing brings with him years of playing at the highest level.

The move is set to run until May 2026, with the option of another year if all goes well.

For Apollon, the deal is not just about adding depth.

It is about bringing in a player who has tested himself across several leagues and who knows the demands of top-level football.

The club will hope that his presence helps them compete in Cyprus and make a mark in European competition.

Supporters are eager to see if this move can be the turning point in what has been an unpredictable career.

Serbian Lazar Markovic, once seen as one of Europe’s brightest prospects, has signed with Apollon after his contract with UAE side Baniyas expired earlier this summer.

The former Liverpool midfielder’s career began with huge expectations when Liverpool paid around £20 million to bring him from Benfica in 2014.

He showed flashes of promise, scoring in the League Cup against Bournemouth and assisting against Sunderland.

But inconsistency and discipline problems slowed him down.

A straight red card against Basel in the Champions League proved to be a turning point, and he finished his Liverpool spell with just 34 appearances and three goals before moving on through a series of loans.

Internationally, Markovi? also struggled to build momentum.

He made his Serbia debut at 18 and collected 22 caps, but after 2016 he faded from the national picture and missed out on the 2018 World Cup squad.

Now at 30, he is determined to restart his career in Cyprus.

Speaking about his roots, he said: “I wish Red Star luck, but I’m rooting for Benfica.”

It was a reminder of where he made his name before the Liverpool move.

From Liverpool’s perspective, it is another reminder of a talent that never quite reached the levels expected at Anfield.

For Apollon, though, it represents hope that Markovi? can finally deliver consistency and experience where it is needed most.
