Liverpool’s transfer market is full of intrigue this summer as the Reds look to take the next step as Premier League champions.

It was a remarkable season at Anfield as Liverpool were crowned as kings of England for the 20th time.

After barely lifting a finger in his first transfer window in 2024, Arne Slot deserves full credit for steering what was essentially Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad to the title.

With moves being made all over the place, though, Slot is taking a different approach in 2025.

Players have already left and more will leave, with others coming in to replace them.

There is danger in signing players at Liverpool just as there can be peril in not signing them, however, and it remains to be seen whether Slot and the recruitment team have made any errors in judgement.

Those mistakes are not always immediately apparent, and in rewinding to 2024, it is now clear that Slot and his team at Liverpool made one glaring error in the summer transfer market.

Although Liverpool only signed Federico Chiesa in Slot’s first summer in charge, there were many, many more rumours besides.

One of the biggest sagas was a will-they-won’t-they storyline involving Liverpool and Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Liverpool reportedly agreed to sign Gordon and even scheduled a medical for the 24-year-old before Newcastle pulled the plug.

Latterly, the Magpies are said to have come back to the table with Liverpool, with the idea floated that Jarell Quansah could join as part of a swap deal.

With Quansah coming off the back of an excellent breakthrough season at Anfield, the Reds reportedly dismissed the idea as a non-starter.

However, with Quansah now on the way to Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £35m fee, Liverpool should now look back at this decision with more than a little regret.

Some will argue that this it is perhaps a little unfair to point the finger at Slot – or anyone else – for making the decision not to swap Quansah for Gordon.

At the time, the centre-back was incredibly highly rated.

Having displaced Ibrahima Konate at the end of the previous season, Quansah had a chance to begin the campaign as Virgil van Dijk’s regular partner.

Ultimately, that is what happened, although his status as Slot’s preferred foil for Van Dijk lasted all of 45 minutes.

From the opening day onwards, Quansah struggled to impress the Liverpool head coach, who must have thought back to Newcastle’s proposal on more than one occasion.

Had Liverpool seen Quansah’s dip coming, they would clearly have taken the deal on the table for Gordon.
