Arne Slot centre-back admission after latest defensive injury

Arne Slot’s post-match admission speaks volumes about one area of concern for Liverpool.

Despite the Reds record spending spree this summer, it appears there is one position that has become a concern has the window has developed.

Jarell Quansah departed Liverpool on a permanent deal to Bayer Leverkusen, whilst Joe Gomez has just picked up yet another injury before touching a ball in Asia.

This leaves Liverpool with two fit senior centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, and if either of the duo follow Gomez to the sidelines, Liverpool will be in trouble.

The lack of depth was evident today during Liverpool’s pre-season game against AC Milan.

Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch were drafted in to play at centre-back in the second half, and Liverpool’s defensive frailties were clear to see as they conceded three goals in the second half to lose the game 4-2.

After the game, Arne Slot was very open and direct about the fact that the club have let Jarell Quansah go but haven’t replaced him and has expressed his desire to do so.

“I don’t think we have a concern at centre back.

Ryan showed he can play that position, he did it as well although we favour him as a No.6.

Wata Endo can play there.

So we have enough options, but it is true that Jarell Quansah left, and we haven’t replaced him yet.”

Whilst Arne Slot never gives too much away, it is safe to assume that whilst he has belief in his defensive midfielders being able to do a solid shift at centre-back, it is far from ideal, and he will be eager to provide some much-needed depth to his defensive department.

Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace has been the centre-back most strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, and it appears that after today any potential deal to sign a centre-back may accelerate.

We exclusively revealed at the start of July that Marc Guehi had reached an agreement on personal terms with Liverpool, but the club have been biding their time on agreeing a fee.

It appears only a matter of time now before Liverpool sign a centre-back during this window and Marc Guehi is looking like the most likely addition.
