Since his move from Eintracht Frankfurt, the 23-year-old's conversation surrounding him on Merseyside has been dominated by whether the pair will play alongside each other or if Ekitike will drop to the bench.

Due to a restricted pre-season, following his transfer saga, Arne Slot has opted to slowly bed the Sweden international into the Premier League champions' squad after being forced to train on his own by the Magpies.

Nevin says that he isn't surprised that Isak hasn't flown out of the traps, in the two cameos he has had for Liverpool since his deadline day move, and questioned whether the Dutch head coach could deploy him off the left.

"I do (think Ekitike could keep Isak out of the team), you know, because Isak needs to be at his best," he told BetIdeas.com

"Isak is an interesting player when you go and watch him quite a lot.

The nearest Premier League club to me is Newcastle so I get to see him quite a bit.

"There are games when he's quiet and he's not hustling and bustling and elbowing people out of the way, and he's not flying everywhere.

He's like, get the ball to me and I'll do some things.

"Remember, this is a different team.

There's gaps, home and away usually.

"So the Jack Grealish problem comes up again.

You're now at a different club who have a different style and won't have massive amounts of space to run into.

"So, add that on top of the fact that he's not fit.
