Liverpool supporters have been given the taste for transfers after an incredibly busy summer window for their club.

The Reds had become used to being quiet in terms of the market, often deciding to add just one or two players to the squad.

That rulebook was rewritten this summer as Liverpool brought in eight players, two of them for British record transfer fees.

After such a period of splurging from the Liverpool owners, fans may expect there to be little to no action over the next two or three windows.

However, the Reds clearly have designs on handing Arne Slot the best tools possible to continue being successful.

Slot and the Liverpool recruitment team have so far been aligned on their designs for who to bring in and when to do it.

All of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo were signed mid-season.

It remains to be seen who Liverpool’s targets will be going into 2026, but what is fairly clear is that the Reds would still love to sign Marc Guehi, who was poised to join from Crystal Palace on deadline day.

On Sunday there were claims that Liverpool will not sign Guehi in January, instead waiting to get the centre-back on a free transfer in the summer.

But as of today, the intention of Liverpool is to go for Marc Guehi as a free agent, not to go for him in the January window.”

“If something happens in the next months, Liverpool can decide to revisit their decision and get Guehi in January by negotiating with Palace,” Romano adds.

“But Liverpool are not happy with what happened on deadline day and they are planning for Guehi as a target on a free transfer.

“If in the next months something will happen at Liverpool or Arne Slot, or anyone at the club will decide okay let’s go for Guehi immediately, January can still be the case.

But for now the intention is for a free transfer in 2026.”

At this juncture, it is hard to see how anything could really change Liverpool’s plan and make them go for Guehi in January.

Slot has four senior centre-backs at his disposal, as well as potentially Wataru Endo, Andy Robertson and even Ryan Gravenberch who could be used in an emergency situation.

The only thing that could perhaps force Liverpool’s hand is if another club come in with an offer for Guehi.

Palace will probably be willing sellers, as long as their season is not in jeopardy, and it is not impossible that a Bayern Munich, Chelsea or Barcelona attempt to get the 25-year-old this winter.

Guehi is a ‘fantastic’ player and will surely have many clubs after him.

In that case, Liverpool might decide they must act instead of losing out on a top target.
