Liverpool supporters keeping a close eye on their favourite stars will have seen not three, but four Reds take to the field as the Netherlands defeated Finland in their FIFA World Cup qualifier on Saturday night.

Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch were joined by the club's new signing, Jeremie Frimpong.

The 24-year-old's £29.5m switch from Bayer Leverkusen was confirmed two days before the start of the summer transfer window, with the Reds to pay that release clause fee in instalments over the next three years.

It was a clear statement of intent, with deals for Germany's Florian Wirtz and Hungary's Milos Kerkez now being worked on.

Frimpong, able to function as a wing-back or full-back, was announced only hours after Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid was brought forward by a month.

Though the head coach will be forced into being adaptable in a way that he was not during his first Premier League title-winning season in England, as next January, as the team's top source of goals, Mohamed Salah is expected to participate for Egypt in the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The 2024/25 provider of 57 strikes and assists would miss a string of matches, the exact number of which cannot be determined until the full schedule comes out, but evidence from 2023 shows he missed five.

But that total looks as if it will increase, as now the first month of the calendar plays host to Champions League fixtures on top of the regular Premier League and domestic cup schedule.

How will Liverpool cope without Salah?

Well, they have managed before, and now this time they will have Frimpong.

Coming back to the Netherlands' match against Finland, manager Ronald Koeman was given the tricky task of squeezing the new Liverpool recruit into a team with Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries, with both like-for-like in their positioning.

"Denzel has always played with a real right winger in front of him, Jeremie is that for me.

If Jeremie is outside, Denzel can go inside," the 62-year-old reasoned on Dutch TV channel NPO prior to kick-off.

So, it was Frimpong starting in a more advanced role than usual for his country.

He was the only player to return 100 percent of his shots on target (2/2), completed three crosses and made two key passes.

And while Frimpong is still awaiting his first appearance for the Reds, head coach Slot has already been given the blueprint he may need to call upon next January, albeit with Conor Bradley taking up Dumfries' role.
