Liverpool boss Arne Slot has hit the ground running this summer by dramatically stepping up the club's transfer activity at Anfield.

But in doing so, he has done something Jurgen Klopp was reluctant to ever do when it came to his approach in the transfer market.

Klopp, 58, had previously highlighted his commitment to maintaining Liverpool's financial health above huge expenditures, putting them in contrast with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United.

Yet initially, upon his Anfield arrival, Klopp was firmly opposed to shelling out £100million fees for single players – although he ultimately did ease his stance over time.

Liverpool have now surpassed that £100m milestone with the landmark acquisition of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a British record transfer for up to £116m, if all the £16m add-ons are paid.

Back in 2016, though, while reflecting on United's hefty £89m spend to re-sign Paul Pogba from Juventus, Klopp said: "If you bring one player in for £100m or whatever and he gets injured then it all goes through the chimney.

"The day that this is football, I'm not in a job any more, because the game is about playing together.

That is why somebody invented passes so these players can play together.

"It's not about running with the ball because you can do it all the time.

It is about how it is."

Liverpool have bolstered their squad with the signing of 22-year-old Wirtz, with the deal guaranteeing £100m will be paid over time.

Despite the transfer window being open for less than a month, such a sum would shatter the club's previous record for spending in any single window.

Klopp previously came close to this figure back in the summer of 2018 when he lavished approximately £170m on fresh talent.
