Doing decisively well in first Champions League league phase last season, in which he won seven out of the eight games handed to him, he will be hoping to go one step further in the knockout stages.
The Reds topped the table due to the seven wins they picked up but were handed an unfortunately difficult opponent in PSG for their round of sixteen tie and Luis Enrique had just got the Parisians ticking.
That was clear to see and whilst Liverpool put up a valiant effort, they would eventually bow out on penalties to the team that went on to win the whole thing.
It makes the pill slightly less bitter to swallow, but Arne Slot would’ve been kicking himself that he was so close to knocking the eventual winners out.
The return of Champions League action has returned for Liverpool today as they welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield.
An eye-watering curtain raiser, it will be interesting to see that drama that follows two heavyweights clashing at such an early stage of the competition.
A lot less at stake, but still definitely one to tune in to.
In Arne Slot’s programme notes, his message is clear – It is never too soon for a special European atmosphere at Anfield.
“When the draw for this season’s competition was first made, we knew that we were in a difficult group and this feeling was underlined when it was confirmed that our first game would be against Atletico, a team which has established itself as one of the strongest in Spain and also in Europe over the last decade.”
“This means we have to be ready for the qualities, strengths and challenges that we know Atletico will bring.”
“I know it is very early in this season’s Champions League with another seven group games to go after this fixture, but I don’t think it could ever be too soon to have a special European atmosphere at Anfield, especially as our fans know better than anyone else how much of a difference they can make.”
