Arne Slot has told his Liverpool players to not let their standards slip when they meet Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at "special" Wembley this weekend.

And Slot wants his side to finish their pre-season campaign on a high - by making up for their Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle by claiming some silverware on the hallowed turf.

“As someone who has followed English football all my life, I know how special a game at Wembley is,” Slot told the FA website.

“I had my first taste of this place as a head coach last season, and I am really looking forward to being back out there with my team.

As a head coach, you want three things at this time of year; to get some good work in on the training ground, competitive and challenging games and to steer clear of injuries.

“We know, of course, what we achieved last season, and it is important from our point of view that we maintain the standards we set during the past 12 months.”

Slot credited Sunday's opponents Palace for claiming the club's first major trophy in their FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May

“They have good players, a very good coach with a clear idea of how to play, and to achieve what they achieved last season, winning here against Manchester City was really impressive."

While Slot will be keen to land a first trophy of the season, the occasion will give the Liverpool boss a chance to get one final look at some of his new signings before their Premier League opener at home to Bournemouth on August 15.

Liverpool have spent more than £300million this summer following a club-record £116m deal for Florian Wirtz, the £79m signing of Hugo Ekitike and the arrivals of Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m), Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m).

Youngster Rio Ngumoha, 16, could also feature as part of the matchday squad after impressing during pre-season including a stunning opening goal in Monday's 4-1 win in the first of two back-to-back friendlies against Athletic Bilbao.

Liverpool have won the Community Shield 16 times in their history (including shared titles) while Palace are competing in the match for the first time.
