Arne Slot may quietly have a problem brewing for Liverpool's opening game of the Premier League season - opinion

Liverpool’s pre-season schedule will ramp up over the coming days as the Reds head out to the Far East.

Having kicked off their fixture list with a game against Preston North End last weekend, Liverpool will jet off to Asia this Sunday.

While out in the heat of Hong Kong and Japan, Arne Slot will begin to properly define his plans for the upcoming Premier League season.

Sunday’s win over Preston saw a number of players rested as they continue individual sessions at the Liverpool training ground.

In the days since the match, the likes of Florian Wirtz, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Luis Diaz – who all sat out – have been seen in training.

However, eagle-eyed fans have spotted that Alexis Mac Allister has still not returned to action in Kirkby.

And as concern begins to bubble amongst supporters, Slot may feel he has a problem for the Premier League’s opening day.

While there is still a month to go before Liverpool face Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday August 15th, the clock is now ticking faster towards the start of the campaign.

For Mac Allister, there has been no official confirmation that he is injured, but having missed the last couple of games of 2024/25, he clearly still has an issue.

There is enough time for the Argentine to get the necessary miles in the tank to ensure he’s ready for the season’s kick-off, but it is beginning to run out.

Ordinarily, this would not be such an issue for Slot.

He has Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo and now Wirtz to call upon.

However, supporters would do well to remember that Gravenberch is banned for the beginning of the campaign having been given a straight red card in last term’s final match against Crystal Palace.

Gravenberch will be available for the Community Shield against Palace on August 10th, but is suspended for the visit of Bournemouth five days later.

But that Slot will be without his two most-used midfielders may be concerning him a little.

With just under one month to go before the game against Bournemouth, Slot will be hopeful that Mac Allister will return.

In that respect he will certainly know more than us.

But with Gravenberch definitely missing, the Liverpool head coach will likely be putting together an alternative plan.

That will probably see Wirtz begin as the most advanced midfielder, with Szoboszlai dropping into a deeper role he occasionally performed last year.

The final place is most likely to be filled by Jones, who will be grateful for the chance to get the season off on the right foot.

It is by no means a huge issue for Slot and Liverpool have quality to fill the gaps.

But kicking off a new season with a makeshift midfield against a well-drilled Bournemouth side is not really ideal.
