Liverpool’s season starts this Sunday when they take on Crystal Palace in the 2025 FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm BST.
The Premier League champions will be looking to secure their first silverware of the new campaign against opponents who defied all odds to claim their maiden major trophy just three months ago.
From Palace’s perspective, this Community Shield represents an opportunity to build momentum ahead of what promises to be a challenging season.
The club’s European future remains uncertain, with their Court of Arbitration for Sport appeal regarding UEFA’s decision to demote them from the Europa League to the Conference League due to multi-club ownership rules scheduled for this Friday.
The uncertainty has inevitably affected their transfer planning, with only two new signings brought in during the summer window.
Despite the off-field complications, Palace have managed to retain the core of their FA Cup-winning squad, including key figures like Eze, Marc Guehi, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Dean Henderson.
Speaking at his press conference to preview the Wembley curtain-raiser versus Crystal Palace, the Liverpool boss revealed that Alexis Mac Allister will feature but not for the entire match – while Joe Gomez is ruled out:
“He will be in the squad [on Sunday],” Slot said of Mac Allister.
“He was out for two months I think, or longer because we didn’t play him in the last four games of the season.
He trained with us since a week now, played 30 minutes, 45 minutes.
“So that’s not a situation where you would start a player [and] play him for 90 minutes?
Starting is possible but definitely not for 90 minutes.”
On Joe Gomez’s fitness, meanwhile, Slot said: “Unfortunately he has a minor injury at the moment but he will be back with the team very soon.”
Alisson was spotted in training yesterday and is expected to play at Wembley, while the jury is still out on the status of Conor Bradley who missed the double header vs Athletic Bilbao on Monday.
