It’s felt like the summer transfer window has already opened for Liverpool despite the official start not coming for another two weeks or so.
Liverpool’s early activity is partly driven by the unique structure of this summer’s transfer market.
FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup (June 14–July 13) has necessitated an exceptional registration period from June 1–10, allowing participating clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea to reinforce squads ahead of the tournament.
While Liverpool are not in the competition, the ripple effects of this calendar adjustment have accelerated negotiations across Europe.
The Reds are capitalizing on this dynamic, advancing talks for Jeremie Frimpong, whose €35 million (£29.6 million) release clause makes him a cost-effective replacement for the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold.
We have exclusively that Arne Slot had direct talks with the Dutch international on Friday ahead of the move being finalized.
And with the Florian Wirtz saga now also starting to get underway, Arne Slot was quizzed on what the transfer situation is at Liverpool in his pre-Brighton press conference.
The Dutchman responded by asking journalists if they had seen the pictures of him in Ibiza this past week:
“Did you not see the videos of me on social media this week?”
“Even if you celebrate it doesn’t mean you don’t think about something else.”
My thoughts are into next season, if this week was decisive for us, now it’s clear what we’ve done so it is normal our thoughts on the couch tonight are more into next season than if this week was still important.”
“Maybe the players’ thoughts are with the national team and these games are more important than the next few days.
We think about transfers more, more meetings.”
Liverpool’s early business reflects a desire to avoid the protracted negotiations that marred previous windows.
By triggering Frimpong’s clause and positioning themselves for Wirtz, the club aims to integrate new signings well before pre-season.
But as always, Arne Slot is not giving away anything in his press conferences.
