Arne Slot offered a candid assessment after Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in front of nearly 50,000 fans in Hong Kong.
While acknowledging positives, he pointed to tactical gaps and rotation demands (via Liverpool FC):
“We missed out on seven senior players and we wanted to give 20 players playing time.
“As a result of that, too many players didn’t play in their own position.
We were a bit too open once in a while on the counter-attack.”
Slot dismissed concerns over depth at centre-back, noting that players like Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo can fill in if needed.
Joe Gomez’s injury is minor and while Jarell Quansah hasn’t been replaced, Slot believes the squad has the flexibility to cope.
“We’ve tried to bring new energy in but also ‘weapons’.” he explained.
“If you do the same as we did last year we will probably not be able to win it again.”
He highlighted the importance of both new additions and keeping key players tied down with extended contracts.

“Most players have stayed fit and we’ve had a lot of help and support from the people of Hong Kong.”
