Arne Slot has revealed the one thing he had to do to the Liverpool squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp.
The Dutchman has been a hit since joining Liverpool in the summer.
Liverpool and Slot are on the cusp of history, with one point standing between them and a Premier League winners’ medal at the end of this season.
Slot’s impact has undoubtedly been real at the club!
His blend of tactical dexterity and a calm persona has Liverpool playing a predictable but practical brand of football that is leading them to their 20th league crown in history.
However, every player (except Federico Chiesa) who has helped Slot to the brink of a Premier League title is a player he inherited from his predecessor, Klopp.
The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were part of the last Liverpool team to win the Premier League title?
At the same time, Ryan Gravenberch, Luis Díaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Cody Gakpo —players who have had a huge impact this season —all won titles under Klopp.
It is fair to say that the current team has Klopp’s handwriting all over it, despite slightly changing the way they play under Slot.
The Liverpool manager was confronted with the question of how much of the success he is enjoying is down to the foundation laid by Klopp.
In a wide-ranging interview with Men In Blazers, Slot was asked: “How much credit do you allow yourself to take, and how much of the team’s success is based on what you inherited.
If you are asked to give a percentage, what was your percentage, and what was Klopp’s?”
“I don’t think you can say this in a percentage,” he replied.
“The only thing I can say is that we took a lot of what was already very good over here.
We inherited the team that played for the past six, seven or eight years—a major part of English football.
“(The) players had a lot of quality.
That’s what they’re probably going to try next season as well.
“But that’s definitely what we’re also going to try also.
“How much percentage this (team) is different from what it was before is difficult to say.”
