Arne Slot kept his promise by meeting with Lyon's Rayan Cherki, and now he's hoping that Florian Wirtz will do the same.

As reported earlier this week, Slot honored a previous commitment to meet with the French attacker and his team for transfer talks about a potential move this summer.

The 21-year-old Frenchman has been turning heads at Lyon this season.



According to The Athletic, Slot had agreed to the meeting before Liverpool made progress in their attempts to sign Wirtz

Despite the lack of advancement in what could be a record-breaking move for the German player, which caused some Liverpool fans anxiety, there is still hope and expectation from all parties that the deal can be finalized.

Liverpool has so far had two offers for Wirtz rejected, the latest being around £109 million ($147 million), which was turned down on Friday, but Leverkusen haven't dismissed these bids outright and instead want to keep Liverpool in the negotiation process.

Therefore, the aim is to sell their star player outside of Germany.

Liverpool, initially competing with Manchester City, managed to get themselves at the front of the line, and Slot's vision for the player impressed Wirtz and his team.

Wirtz was less than thrilled by what Bayern Munich had to offer, so he decided on a move to Anfield, leaving it up to the financial teams to finalize the deal.

His only wish is to complete the transfer as quickly as possible, ideally before Germany's UEFA Nations League semi-final against Portugal on Wednesday, but this isn't a strict deadline.

Leverkusen has suggested that Liverpool could include a player in the deal to bridge the financial gap, but Liverpool is confident that a straight cash deal can be agreed upon.

Everyone involved certainly hopes so, with Slot's visit to Cherki merely serving as a backup plan.
