Federico Chiesa scored a dramatic goal for Liverpool in their 4-2 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League opener.
The Reds were locked at 2-2 with Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night when Chiesa was introduced from the bench in the 81st minute.
Just seven minutes later, the Italian volleyed the ball into the Kop-end net, putting Arne Slot’s side back in front and sending the home supporters into ecstasy.
Before Mohamed Salah’s strike sealed a 4-2 victory in Liverpool’s first competitive home fixture since the passing of Jota and his brother, André Silva.
“It is [the moment I’ve been waiting for].
It’s a great goal!” Chiesa told Liverpoolfc.com.
“It was really emotional today and after I scored, my thoughts went to Diogo, to Andre, to his family who were here today.
It was really emotional.
He’s always with us, he’s going to be with us.
“It was tough today but there was a great atmosphere, the fans were amazing throughout the game.
Really, really emotional.”
Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has opened up about why he didn’t immediately congratulate Chiesa after his first Premier League goal for Liverpool.
The pair have played together for Italy before and hope to reunite at next year’s World Cup.
Calafiori said to Sky Sports Italia: “I can send it now.
“He had a tough season last year, and we never spoke, so I didn’t want to jump on the bandwagon when things are going well.
“We knew each other during the latest Euros?
We didn’t talk much, but he’s a very good guy, and I hope he can play consistently.
“Maybe not too much, because we want to win the Premier League, but I hope to see him soon with the national team.”
