Arsenal’s poor run of form at Newcastle could continue after the Premier League made a major announcement before the match.

The Gunners have won just once in their past five matches at Newcastle in all competitions, with their last visit to St James’ Park seeing the Toon progress to the Carabao Cup final.

Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City means Mikel Arteta’s side travel to face Eddie Howe’s men, second in the Premier League table.

Newcastle have had a difficult start to the campaign, with Nick Woltemade’s winner against Wolves on his debut their only success so far.

After being on VAR duty during Arsenal‘s draw against Man City, Jarrad Gillett will referee the Gunners’ clash at Newcastle.

Gillett has refereed Arsenal 10 times previously and Newcastle 13 times before, with both suffering victories and defeats on his watch.

Gillett has been the centre of controversy when officiating Arsenal matches previously.

During Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace in 2023, Gillett sent Takehiro Tomiyasu off for two yellow card offences.

The Japanese defender was first booked for time wasting over a throw-in, before he was adjudged to have brought down Jordan Ayew on a Crystal Palace counter-attack.

Tomiyasu’s departure from Arsenal in the summer transfer window means he will not have to worry about Gillett’s actions this time around.

Meanwhile, Gunners supporters will be hoping that Gillett doesn’t make a glaring error this weekend at St James’ Park.
