Liverpool and Arsenal are back in business for the first time since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s move to Anfield in a deal worth £35m.
The England international rejected a move to Chelsea to seal a transfer to Liverpool in the summer of 2017.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was in the last year of his Arsenal contract, rejected a new deal worth up to £180,000 a week to stay at the Emirates.
He had featured in each of Arsenal’s four games that season.
Oxlade-Chamberlain racked up 198 appearances for Arsenal, having joined them from Southampton in August 2011, scoring 20 goals.
Oxlade-Chamberlain helped the Reds win the Premier League title in 2020, but was hampered by injuries at Anfield.
He made 13 appearances in his final season at the club.
The 31-year-old, who sustained two serious knee injuries in his time at Liverpool, played 146 games and scored 18 goals for the Premier League champions.
Oxlade-Chamberlain also won the Champions League (2019), FIFA Club World Cup (2019), FA Cup (2022), League Cup (2022), and UEFA Super Cup (2019) during his time at the club.
Liverpool and Arsenal have now struck a deal that will see Canada forward Olivia Smith move to the Emirates for a world-record fee.
Smith, who has become the most expensive signing in women’s football history completed a £1m move to Arsenal on Thursday.
Her move breaks the record set by Chelsea in January when they signed USA defender Naomi Girma for £900,000 from San Diego Wave.
“It’s a privilege and an honour to sign for Arsenal,” said Olivia.
“It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I’m excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal.
“The atmosphere the supporters create at Emirates Stadium is incredible and I can’t wait to have that behind me now.”
The 20-year-old featured in 20 WSL games last season, scoring seven of Liverpool’s 22 goals as they finished seventh in the league.
Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley added: “We’re thrilled to bring Olivia to Arsenal.
She’s one of the most talented young players in the game and has huge potential for further development here at the club.
“On behalf of everyone at Arsenal, I’d like to welcome Olivia to Arsenal and congratulate her on this special moment.”
Head Coach Renée Slegers added: “Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal.
“We’ve been impressed by her mentality and character, excelling in two European leagues at such a young age.
“I know she has a level of ambition that matches our own and we’re looking forward to working with her as she continues to grow at the club.”
She became Canada’s youngest-ever player when she won her first cap at the age of 15 in 2019.
Smith has since made 18 appearances and scored four goals for Canada, representing her country at the 2023 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup, where she was named Best Young Player?
Olivia also won Canada’s Young Player of the Year award in 2024.
