Arsenal sprung a surprise on Wednesday as it swooped in to steal Eberechi Eze from underneath fierce rival Tottenham's nose.

Spurs thought they were on the brink of signing one of the most exciting attackers in the Premier League, but Kai Havertz's knee injury prompted the Gunners to tweak their plans in the transfer window, and Eze is now on the brink of moving to the Emirates Stadium.

He will become Arsenal's seventh signing of the summer — and the fourth to cost over $60 million, as the North London club aims to prepare a squad that is capable of finally getting over the line in the Premier League.

Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard and Kepa have all joined Arsenal this summer, and Eze will take the Gunners spend to over $350 million.

That is not far shy of what Liverpool has spent on revamping its squad, which might surprise some people considering the fuss that has surrounded the Reds' summer spend.

It has gone somewhat under the radar just how much Arsenal has spent, and unlike Liverpool, the large spend has not been offset by significant sales.

Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos are the only players who have left Arsenal for a transfer fee, and neither commanded a significant one.

Liverpool, on the other hand, has brought in hundreds of millions of dollars from the sales of the likes of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Jarell Quansah, while there could yet be another big fee on the way for Harvey Elliott.

That is promising for Liverpool from a financial perspective, but it remains to be seen how such a big overhaul will affect the team on the pitch.

Arne Slot has overhauled his squad this summer

Liverpool's starting line-up against Bournemouth last Friday featured four new starters, and the teething problems from pre-season and the Community Shield followed the Reds into that game, as they conceded two more goals and required a late goal to win.

As for Arsenal, while its net spend for the summer is going to end up being significantly higher than Liverpool's, logic dictates that the Gunners should be more settled on the pitch than the defending champions.

The core of Mikel Arteta's squad has remained largely the same, and all of the new signings have been made to compliment the existing group of players, rather than replace many of them, as has been the case at Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah made that point as he opted to pile the pressure on Arsenal during the PFA awards night on Wednesday, when he anointed the Gunners title favorites.

“I think Arsenal have a great team this season as you did last season," Salah said

I think you are the favorite now because you players who have been together for five years.”

It was a wise move from Salah at a time when most neutrals are tipping Liverpool's exciting young squad to defend the title with ease, but he may also have been telling the truth — the title race could be much closer this time around.
