Arsenal reportedly baulked at the would-be price tag of Alexander Isak, as they 'rejected' the chance to sign the Liverpool target following his bombshell statement.

According to reports, the Gunners quickly 'turned down' the idea to hijack the Reds' pursuit of the Sweden international.

The update comes after Isak didn't join his fellow professionals at the PFA Awards in Manchester on Tuesday night - due to the ongoing hysteria surrounding his future at St James' Park.

The likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah picked up their accolades for being included in the Premier League Team of the Season.

Newcastle's record signing has been told to train on his own after the Magpies returned from a pre-season tour in the Far East.

During the ceremony on Tuesday, Isak posted a bombshell statement to social media - alleging 'broken promises'.

Shortly after, Newcastle hit back in a release of their own.

According to The Independent, speculation emerged that Arsenal may go for the Liverpool target themselves, but it has been claimed their general response was 'no chance' - with owner Josh Kroenke in attendance at Manchester Opera House.

The summer transfer window closes on September 1 with Liverpool facing a race against time to sign Isak.

Newcastle, themselves, are pushing for reinforcements after a damaging summer for their shopping list - missing out on a host of players.

But reports suggest they are still pushing to land targets.

Speaking during Friday's press conference, manager Eddie Howe said: "The club has to act in the best interests of Newcastle and we will do that in every situation.

"I think it is a lose-lose situation to a degree for us - I don't think we can come out of this winning in any situation.

"That is why I have said all summer it is a difficult situation for the club to manage.

"My emotion was one of disappointment in the respect of these things being made public.

"For me, all of these things, ideally, should be face to face, club on player.

Yes, in public, it's great for you guys, it's great news, but it doesn't reflect well on us or Alex.

"For me, it's a sad moment trying to deal with it all.
