Aston Villa could soon accelerate a move to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Max Beier as Brentford fall away from the chase to land his services.

Aston Villa are looking to add another forward to their ranks as the deadline edges ever closer, with Unai Emery’s side struggling to create and put their chances away in the opening stages of the new campaign.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (29 August) that Aston Villa are rivalling Brentford for Dortmund striker Max Beier as they explore a last-gasp move ahead of the deadline.

The Villans made contact over a late-window deal, but looked to have fallen behind their Premier League rivals as Brentford submitted a £45million bid to sign Beier on Friday while also aiming to bolster their attacking ranks.

Beier notched eight goals and five assists in 29 Bundesliga appearances last season, but despite the Bees’ approach, it could be Villa who are soon set to sign him following a new development.

According to a new update on the saga from The Athletic (29 August), Brentford‘s club-record £45m offer for Beier has been turned down by Dortmund.

The same report states that the West London club are not expected to return with a new offer for the 22-year-old striker, and so Villa look set to have a free run at his services if they wish to pursue a deal.

It looks as if the Villans will have to offer a fee bigger than that of Brentford’s to secure his signature, but a report from talkSPORT (29 August) claims that the Germany international has been “reluctant” to move to Brentford for reasons that were not disclosed.

That could potentially mean that he favours a switch to the Second City instead, and so even if the Bees’ bid had been accepted, it seems likely that he would refused to make the move.

Villa have already signed a striker this summer, with Evann Guessand joining from OGC Nice to play as a back up to Ollie Watkins, but he can also play out wide and seems more likely to get minutes there given Emery’s current wing options.

The Basque boss only has Donyell Malen and Samuel Iling-Junior as his current out-and-out wingers in the squad, and Morgan Rogers is on Liverpool’s radar so could soon be taken away as an option to play on the left flank.

With that said, the Lions are right to eye up a move for Beier, and he is clearly highly-rated in his home country with four Germany caps to his name since making his international debut last year.

Beier was named in Hansi Flick’s squad for Euro 2024, and is already a seasoned scorer in the Bundesliga after netting 16 times in 33 league games for Hoffenheim prior to joining Dortmund ahead of last season.

Villa are interested in his services, so they clearly know that he is set to be a smart addition to their ranks if signed, and now that their main rivals are out of the running, they need to flex their financial muscles and offer Dortmund enough to land Beier before the deadline.
