The tragic car accident that claimed the lives of both brothers occurred several months ago as they were traveling by road to England, sending shockwaves throughout the football community.
Atletico Madrid have taken the initiative in reaching out to Liverpool to coordinate a tribute that would honor both Portuguese brothers during the match at Anfield, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The arrangements may require approval from UEFA, given the Champions League setting.
This would not be the first time Jota has been honored by the Lag Liga giant since the tragedy.
Atletico Madrid and FC Porto previously paid tribute to the Portuguese forward during their friendly match in August at the Estádio do Dragão.
Although many may not be aware, Jota was also an Atletico Madrid player once upon a time – although the late Liverpool man never managed to make an appearance under Diego Simeone.
The Spanish club signed him from Paços de Ferreira for €7.2 million in 2016.
The Portuguese forward was immediately loaned out to gain experience and development opportunities elsewhere.
His first loan spell took him to FC Porto for the 2016-17 season, where he impressed with his performances in familiar surroundings.
The following summer Atletico arranged another loan deal, this time sending Jota to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who were competing in the Championship at the time
The move proved transformative for both player and club, as Jota’s contributions helped Wolves secure promotion to the Premier League.
Wolverhampton exercised their purchase option in June 2018, paying Atletico Madrid approximately €14 million for Jota’s permanent transfer.
Speaking earlier this month, Andy Robertson confirmed that Liverpool’s leadership group will do everything to help Jota’s family deal with the tragedy
“It was such a surprise, such a shock.
Losing one of my closest mates, for me, was hugely difficult.”
“We’ll carry the memories we have from our time with him?
And as long as we continue to do that, he’ll always be in our thoughts, and he’ll always be in our hearts.”
“I know the leaders in that changing room have got a big job to do this season in terms of trying to help everyone as a club and even Diogo’s family throughout this massively difficult moment.”
