Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has addressed all the Julian Alvarez speculation and tentative Liverpool links.
Earlier this week, the Reds were tentatively linked with the World Cup winner by Marca.
Furthermore, Fabrizio Romano – while not naming Liverpool directly – confirmed that Premier League sides are interested:
“Atletico Madrid absolutely want to keep Julian.
There’s interest from Premier League, it’s true for sure but Atléti insist on keeping him,” the Italian wrote in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter.
The Argentina international has enjoyed a spectacular debut season at Atletico Madrid, netting 29 goals across all competitions in what has been the most prolific campaign of his career.
Liverpool’s interest dates back to 2023, when Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, confirmed the club’s approach before his Atlético transfer.
While Liverpool test the waters, Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta – formerly of Atletico – is also a big fan Alvarez.
Barcelona also loom as wildcards, though their financial constraints make a 2025 deal unlikely.
Atletico made a €81 million investment to bring the forward to Spain back in 2024.
With Alvarez’s contract running until 2030 and a €150 million release clause, it will be a tough deal to broker.
Now Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has outlined a strong stance for the summer, in quotes brought forth by the Mirror:
“Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid?
He’s very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player.”
“He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid.”
The player’s versatility, work rate, and proven ability at the highest level make him an attractive proposition for Slot, who is seeking to revamp Liverpool’s attacking options with Darwin Nunez potentially departing.
But with his projected price tag and the Spanish giants’ strong stance, a summer deal looks unlikely.
