Atletico Madrid have emerged as contenders to sign Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur when his contract runs out next summer.
The 28-year-old has been at Tottenham for three seasons and remains a key player for the club having started their past two Premier League fixtures.
Football Insider exclusively revealed that Bentancur is next in line for a new deal at Spurs, with fellow midfielder Yves Bissouma’s contract also expiring in a years time.
Thomas Frank signed Joao Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich and wanted Cristian Norgaard from Brentford before he moved to Arsenal, suggesting the holding midfield position is one he wants to address.

As per Spanish publication Fichajes [9 September], Atletico Madrid are “seriously considering” signing Bentancur on a free transfer next summer.
The Spanish club do not want to “pay a high transfer fee,” so if Bentancur signs a new deal at Spurs then the move could be off.

There is still work for Frank to address in the Spurs squad, which was exposed in the defeat at Bournemouth despite a promising start under the Dane.
With James Maddison injured for the rest of the season and Dejan Kulusevski out until the new year, it is creatively in midfield where Frank has a major problem.
Xavi Simons could make his debut for Spurs against West Ham to fill the void, whilst Palhinha and Bentancur are protecting the back four well.
Frank has made Spurs more defensively solid than they were under Ange Postecoglou, and it is now about making them more potent in attack.
Bournemouth were comfortable in their victory at Spurs, citing the need for more work to be done and how they can get the best out of their big summer purchase Mohammed Kudus.
