Following a powerful magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, Japanese authorities issued a tsunami warning impacting the Pacific coast of Japan, including evacuation orders for nearly two million people in northern regions. Waves measuring up to 40cm were recorded in Hokkaido’s Tokachi area, and the first tsunami waves have reached Japan’s northern coasts.
Liverpool’s football team, currently in Yokohama, Japan for pre-season preparations, received emergency warnings amid concerns over the tsunami threat. Despite this, their scheduled friendly against Yokohama F. Marinos at Nissan Stadium is set to proceed as planned. The stadium is located on the western coast, south of Tokyo and inside Tokyo Bay, a location not expected to experience serious impact from the tsunami.

Japanese officials advised immediate evacuation from coastal and riverside areas to higher ground or designated evacuation buildings, warning that tsunami waves could strike repeatedly. Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated that authorities are assessing the situation with a priority on human safety. Public transport to the stadium remains operational, and Yokohama city has mapped out evacuation routes and shelters in case they become necessary.
Liverpool arrived in Japan after a 4-2 pre-season friendly loss to AC Milan in Hong Kong and will continue their build-up to the Premier League season with further matches, including games at Anfield and the FA Community Shield. The club is managing squad changes alongside these preparations. Despite the regional emergency, no major damage has been reported at this time in Japan or other affected Pacific regions, including Hawaii where tsunami waves also arrived.
