Barcelona’s board have agreed to take prompt financial measures as Marcus Rashford faces a period of inactivity until January.

The Catalan giants have been trying to bolster their squad despite the financial constraints the club are currently under.

Hansi Flick’s side swooped in to sign Aston Villa target Joan Garcia from Espanyol to strengthen the goalkeeper position in the wake of Mar-Andre ter Stegen’s injury.

The major signing of the summer was the Blaugrana’s season-long loan move for Marcus Rashford from Man United after the winger became an outcast under Ruben Amorim.

Yet, with a matter of days before the start of the La Liga season, it now is looking possible the 27-year-old may have to wait longer to make his domestic debut.

Rashford had given Barcelona a show of faith by trusting the club to register him before the start of the season, despite the worrying historical trend of their inability to sign up players such as with Dani Olmo.

According to a report by The Athletic (13 August), Blaugrana’s executives are prepared to put their “own personal wealth at risk as part of a bank guarantee” reportedly worth €7million (£6m).

This comes after the club have been “overspending on their salary limit”, meaning they have not been able to register new players.

After signing, it is still unclear whether the club can get him registered in time for the start of the new season

The Athletic understands that the Catalan side’s expectations is that “all signings will be registered” given they have until the end of the transfer window to finalise the details.

Yet, failure to sort out the salary overspending could see the United academy graduate unable to play until January when the next window opens.

Football Insider verdict

Aware of the potential risks of joining a club in a catastrophic financial situation, the England international took a major leap of faith to find more regular minutes.

Taking a wage cut and moving country showed the 27-year-old was eager for a fresh new start after falling out-of-favour at Old Trafford.

His talent is undeniable and with the World Cup coming up next year, the winger will want to impress in order to catch the eye of Thomas Tuchel.

Alarmingly, it remains to be seen whether the number 14 will even be able to put the red and blue shirt on straight away to assist the Catalan side defend their La Liga title.

If he cannot be registered in time, that will seriously jeopardise the ex-Villa attacker’s chances of making the England squad for the World Cup, unless he pulls off a remarkable second half of the campaign.

Regardless, the former Red Devil is in a tricky spot where he must trust in the financial experts to fix the problem and get Rashford ready for the 2025-26 season.
