Liverpool know this after what happened on deadline day with Marc Guehi.
The Crystal Palace defender was high on their list.
Talks were held, and according to reports, all was set for a move to the Merseyside for the English defender.
But in the end, the deal collapsed.
That collapse left Liverpool short of a key target and left Guehi reportedly angry.
Now, only days after the window shut, Barcelona are putting their name into the mix.
The Spanish giants are already looking ahead to next summer and see center-back as a position that needs strengthening.
That puts them on a collision course with Liverpool again, and possibly with Real Madrid too.
According to a report from SPORT, the Catalan club have eyes on the defender.
“Barça’s sporting directors are continuing to monitor any potential move, looking ahead.”
The situation at Barcelona explains why.
Iñigo Martínez left the club this summer.
“Andreas Christensen could leave the club within a year, as the Dane’s contract expires on June 30th and, at the moment, he is not expected to be offered a renewal.”
That opens the door for a new defensive signing, and Guehi is top of the list.
Liverpool had their chance last week.
But “the two clubs failed to reach an agreement, provoking the anger of the player, captain of the last Cup-winning team.”
For Jürgen Klopp’s replacement project at Anfield, missing out on Guehi was a big setback
Liverpool still need to strengthen at the back, and they are not giving up.
“The Reds could return to the fray in the next winter transfer window.”
Guéhi’s contract situation makes him even more attractive.
“His contract expires on June 30, 2026, so he would arrive on a free transfer, having rejected any negotiations with his club to extend the contract he signed when he arrived from Chelsea in 2021 for 23 million euros.”
Palace have been unable to convince him to stay, and the defender looks ready for the next step.
For now, his focus remains on the pitch.
“Guehi, who has played every minute so far this season and has scored one goal, is a strong, fast center back who is very good at winning individual duels, both high and low.”
That level is why Liverpool chased him and why Barcelona and Madrid are circling.
