Former Bayern Munich man and football legend Bastian Schweinsteiger has been reflecting on his time at Manchester United alongside side Gary Neville.

Schweinsteiger was one of the finest players of his generation and won the World Cup, the Champions League, and eight Bundesliga titles in what was a glittering career for the now 39-year-old.

He joined Manchester United in the summer of 2015, and initially racked up 31 appearances under Louis Van Gaal in his debut season.

However, when Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford, things took a turn for the worst – and the World Cup winner was banished from first team training for seemingly no apparent reason.

He then opted to leave for Chiacago Fire in March of 2017, which was understandable after being treated like that by the Red Devils.

And now Bastian Schweinsteiger has revealed the big differences between Liverpool and Manchester United, and why the Merseyside’s have been pulling away from United so much in the past few years.

What did Bastian Schweinsteiger say about Liverpool and Manchester United?

Speaking on the Sky Sports’ The Overlap hosted by Gary Neville, the German footballing legend highlighted the poor transfer strategy that United has employed since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement:

“Sometimes you spend the money completely wrong,” Schweinsteiger began.

“You have to adapt also to how football is changing or not changing.

And the easiest example, and actually United should have learned out of it, is just, I don’t know, how many miles is Liverpool away from United?”

Neville tells the World Cup champion that Manchester and Liverpool are only 45 miles apart.

“Exactly.

Just look over there?

No, look where he got Robertson [Hull City], like other players, the same he did at Borussia Dortmund.”

“He found [Robert] Lewandowski, he found [Mario] Gotze, he found [Mats] Hummels, [Lukasz] Piszczek, [Jakub] Blaszczykowski, [Ilkay] Gundogan, all those players, [Marco] Reus.”

“You just have to look 45 miles aside and just see how they do it and they have dominated since how long?

It’s stable, it’s up there and it doesn’t have the wave United does.”

Schweinsteiger raises a very good point.

The Red Devils have a very long list of ‘flops’ in their recent history, including Jadon Sancho (£73m), Harry Maguire (£80m), Antony (£86), Angel di Maria (£60m) and Paul Pogba(£89m) amongst others.

It’s fair to say that none of those players justified the cost it took to bring them in.

Among Klopp’s best deals are Joel Matip (free), Sadio Mane (£30m), Mohamed Salah (£34m), Andy Robertson (£8m), Alexis Mac Allister (£35m), and Wataru Endo (£16m).
