Bayer Leverkusen have identified their Florian Wirtz replacement in yet another sign that the German international is Anfield bound.

The Premier League champions have already seen two substantial offers rejected, including a €130 million (£109 million) proposal that fell short of Leverkusen’s €150 million asking price.

The 22-year-old German international has made his preference abundantly clear, with multiple reports confirming that Wirtz only wants to join Liverpool.

Personal terms have already been agreed between Liverpool and the player, with Wirtz set to sign a five-year contract worth between 20 and 22 million euros per year, depending on success.

Wirtz’s influence on Leverkusen’s recent success cannot be overstated?

The creative force scored 10 goals and registered 12 assists in 25 Bundesliga starts during the 2024-25 season, helping his side secure second place behind Bayern Munich.

His statistical dominance extends beyond domestic competition, with only Mohamed Salah registering more assists (36) than Wirtz (33) across Europe’s major leagues over the past two seasons

The player’s departure would represent a seismic loss for Leverkusen, particularly given his role in their historic double-winning campaign in 2023-24.

And Die Werkself already have contingency plans for his eventual departure.

Bayer Leverkusen have identified Nico Paz as their preferred replacement, with Erik ten Hag reportedly enthusiastic about the 20-year-old Argentine playmaker.

According to Sport Bild (via Fussball Transfers), Paz has emerged as “the hottest candidate” for the Wirtz succession, representing a significantly younger but potentially equally talented alternative.

The Spanish-born midfielder, who holds both Spanish and Argentine nationality, impressed significantly during his debut professional season with Como 1907 in Serie A

The youngster has contributed six goals and nine assists across 35 appearances in all competitions under Cesc Fabregas.

However, the transfer pathway remains complex, as Real Madrid retain a buyback option valued at eight million euros that they could exercise.

Unlike Real Madrid, where competition for places would be intense, Leverkusen can offer immediate first-team opportunities and European football.

The Argentine’s ambition to establish himself as a regular starter aligns perfectly with Leverkusen’s need for an immediate Wirtz replacement, creating a potentially beneficial arrangement for all parties involved.

It’s yet another indicator that Wirtz is on his way to Liverpool.
