Bayer Leverkusen managing director Simon Rolfes has shared that he never harboured concerns about Xabi Alonso departing for Liverpool or Bayern Munich.
Despite reported interest from both clubs, as Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel were poised to vacate their managerial positions in the summer, Alonso put an end to speculation last month.
He affirmed his commitment to the newly-crowned German champions for at least another season.
The 42-year-old’s team’s unbeaten streak has positioned them as contenders for two additional trophies.
Rolfes remained unfazed by the prospect of losing the former Spain midfielder.
Rolfes told the Mirror: “No.
“My feeling all the time was quite good.
“There has been some interest for sure but my feeling was always that he feels really good and likes to work with Bayer Leverkusen.
“He has a very good connection with the players, the club and the supporters and he feels like ‘okay, maybe it’s good to stay here longer’.
Now we are in the semi-final, we want to go to the Europa League final.
“We’ve also got the DFB Pokal final and that’s a big motivation and inspiration for all of us, the players, the staff, the club and the fans.
The other thing is to convince, to give the players a feeling they’re at the right place to develop.
“It’s about developing their career and also having success together as a team.
This combination puts us in a very good position in the player’s opinion.”
