Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has intimated that Jeremie Frimpong is on the verge of joining Liverpool.

The right-back is expected to sign for the new Premier League champions this week.

The ECHO reported on Sunday (May 18) that Frimpong had undergone the first part of his Liverpool medical.

And this morning (May 19) journalist Fabrizio Romano has stated that the final part of the 24-year-old's medical will take place today along with the signing of his contract.

Leverkusen can do little to prevent Frimpong from leaving given he has a €35m release clause.

The Netherlands international was an unused substitute as last season's Bundesliga champions drew their final game of the 2024-25 campaign 2-2 at Jurgen Klopp's former club Mainz on Saturday.

And Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes told BILD: "It's no secret that he has a prospect clause and there's interest, perhaps from England, perhaps even from Liverpool.

"We'll see what happens.

Even then, it's not final.

"But I'm already informed about things, we're all informed, so it could happen - let's wait and see."

The Reds have identified Frimpong, who has scored 30 goals and provided 44 assists in 190 appearances for Leverkusen, as the successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid after deciding to leave the club he has served for 20 years.

Frimpong had made it clear he would jump at the chance to move to Liverpool and with personal terms having been agreed, he is close to becoming the first transfer of the summer for head coach Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes.

It's expected the defender will sign a five-year contract after completing his medical.

The advancement on the deal for Frimpong comes after Conor Bradley put pen to paper on a new, long-term contract at Anfield.

It's understood the Northern Ireland international's terms run until June 2029 and is a reward for the progress he has made at first-team level over the past 18 months.

Bradley and Frimpong will battle it out for the right-back spot vacated by Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool, who won the Premier League title with four matches to spare, are away to Brighton & Hove Albion tonight (8pm kick-off).
