Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly interviewed one former Liverpool star as a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso.

Alonso’s future at the German club has been a subject of plenty of speculation in recent months.



The former Liverpool midfielder is thought to be the major candidate to replace the out-of-favour Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

The Italian manager has had a poor season at the Bernabeu, and his Real Madrid side is likely to end this season trophyless.

A replacement for him is being looked for, and Alonso is considered a frontrunner for the job.

Bayer Leverkusen’s CEO recently revealed the details of the gentleman’s agreement between his club and Alonso over a potential exit if one of his former clubs came calling.

“From the moment we signed Xabi, we knew he was going to be a great coach, and from the moment you sign one, you have to prepare others,” CEO Fernando Carro revealed recently.

“His signing wasn’t just a one-off.

We have a gentleman’s agreement, and if a team he’s played for comes along, we can sit down.”

With Alonso almost set to take over the job in Madrid, barring any last-minute changes, Leverkusen is already on the hunt for a new manager.

Several options are being considered, including former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa.

The Spaniard who made 92 appearances for Liverpool in three seasons has been building his reputation as a top coach with the Real Madrid youth team, with whom he recently won the 2024–25 La Liga Juvenil title.

It was their first league championship since the 2019–20 season, with Arbeloa building a team that has demonstrated exceptional teamwork and resilience throughout the campaign.

Their latest victory adds to their impressive record, which includes multiple UEFA Youth League titles and a Copa del Rey Juvenil triumph in 2021.?
