Liverpool supporters in Japan were treated to a special moment this week when Florian Wirtz scored his first goal for the club in their 3-1 comeback victory over Yokohama F.
Marinos at the Nissan Stadium.
The German sensation not only found the back of the net with a composed finish in the 62nd minute to level the score, but his impressive all-round performance earned him the Man of the Match award and a unique Japanese gift.
Wirtz was presented with a cheque for one million Japanese yen – equivalent to approximately £5,000 – as recognition for his standout display in Liverpool’s final pre-season friendly of their Asian tour.
The 22-year-old playmaker showed exactly why manager Arne Slot was willing to smash the bank for his services
But it seems Bayer Leverkusen are still missing their star boy, and Wirtz too wants to leave in the best way possible.
According to German outlet Sport.de, Bayer Leverkusen and Florian Wirtz are both keen for a final goodbye after the 22-year-old missed the chance over the summer.
As such, the Bundesliga side have requested Liverpool to release their record signing new week, in time for their training on 5 and possibly 6 August ( Leverkusen play a friendly against Pisa on 5 August at the BayArena)
The report states:
“The Werkself are currently planning to say goodbye to their former star player in front of a large crowd.”
“According to information from RTL/ntv and sport.de, this is now to be made up for next Tuesday.”
“It is the absolute will of Bayer Leverkusen and Florian Wirtz himself to say goodbye in front of their own spectators once again.”
They add that the decision will likely not be made before the weekend, but the request has been made:
“A request to Liverpool FC to release the international from training on 5 and possibly 6 August has already been made.”
“Now we have to wait for the reaction of the Reds around their team manager Arne Slot?
A final decision on whether Wirtz will be cleared for the short trip to Leverkusen is not expected until the weekend.”
