An intriguing report has come out of Germany regarding how Bayern Munich now feels about letting go of Ryan Gravenberch in the summer of 2023.
The Dutchman’s 2022/23 season at Bayern Munich proved deeply frustrating, with the Dutch midfielder starting just three Bundesliga matches and logging only 558 league minutes.
Despite joining for €18 million from Ajax, then-manager Julian Nagelsmann criticized his defensive work rate, leading to limited opportunities.
Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Nagelsmann mid-season, viewed Gravenberch as an attacking midfielder rather than a deeper-lying option, further restricting his role.
By season’s end, Gravenberch had made 24 league appearances – 21 as a substitute – and contributed no goals or assists.
Bayern’s €40 million sale to Liverpool in 2023 came after Gravenberch had played just nine Bundesliga minutes early that season.
His move to Anfield marked a career reset, having effectively lost a full developmental year in Munich.
Initial struggles continued at Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp, with only 12 Premier League starts in 2023/24.
But as well saw, Gravenberch finally spread his wings this season under Slot with the 22-year-old starting all 34 league matches it took to clinch the title, logging 3,738 minutes in the Premier League alone by early May.
Across all competitions, he has featured in 49 matches from the starting lineup, amassing 5,375 minutes – more than double his total from the previous year.
And after watching Liverpool dominate the Premier League with Gravenberch among the top performers, Bayern Munich are not happy with their choice to sell the Dutchman.
Bundesliga insider Christian Falk revealed that there is internal regret in Bavaria:
“Of course, there is internal regret over Ryan Gravenberch’s exit from FC Bayern.
The club knew what he was capable of, but he needed playing time (which he’s been given at Liverpool) that he was never going to get at Bayern Munich,” Christian Falk revealed on his website.
“Thomas Tuchel saw Gravenberch playing further up the pitch, perhaps as a No.10 or an offensive No.8.
But this season has proven that the Dutchman is more than capable of playing a more defensively-minded midfield role.”
The BILD reporter added that if the sale to Liverpool can ultimately be viewed as a massive loss:
“If Tuchel had seen this, Bayern wouldn’t have spent €51m [£43.2m] on João Palhina.
Ultimately, if a player can perform like this at Liverpool, then it’s clear – a mistake was made.”
