Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has said more was “written than spoken” about in the club’s pursuit of Florian Wirtz.
Several reports claimed the German champions were in the driving seat to sign the 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star.
Instead, following a dramatic transfer saga in which Manchester City was also involved, Wirtz now looks bound for Anfield.
Liverpool has long been interested in the player, but even high-ranking club officials felt Wirtz would remain in Germany this summer.
“It's the same for other top clubs and it doesn't change the fact that everyone knows with FC Bayern, you can win everything every year, you're involved in every competition – the upcoming Club World Cup is a good example of this.”
The latter point could perhaps be seen as a dig at Liverpool, who is not set to play in the US-based competition.
