The Merseyside club’s pursuit of Marc Guehi collapsed at the deadline, and Arne Slot now finds himself with just Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez available following Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending ACL injury.
Upamecano, 26, fits the profile Liverpool covet: a ball-playing defender comfortable in a high defensive line who is entering the final year of his contract in Bavaria.
With Bayern desperate to tie him down amid wage-demand standoffs, the France international is expected to become available on a free transfer next summer unless an extension is agreed.

BILD reported on Thursday that Liverpool were among the clubs keen on the Frenchman.
However, it seems that Bayern Munich are going to do their utmost to keep their hands on thier hands on Upamecano.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed that his side are in “open talks” with the Frenchman over a contract renewal:
“There are very open talks, especially with Dayot Upamecano
It’s no big secret that we have a great desire to extend with Upamecano.”
“And as far as the other players are concerned, there are a few contracts expiring
Players who have been with FC Bayern for a long time.
“These are players who have a completely different perception, for themselves, but also for the team, for FC Bayern
If we think it’s the right time, we’ll start the talks behind closed doors in peace.”
The France international has made six appearances so far this season, anchoring Bayern Munich’s defence.
Since his transfer from RB Leipzig in 2021, Upamecano has played in over 150 matches for the German champions.
