Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and president Herbert Hainer have spoken about Leroy Sane’s decision to switch agents amid reported interest from Liverpool.
Sane’s future at Bayern Munich has taken a dramatic turn in the last couple of days after his decision to switch agents mid-negotiations.
The German international’s deal at Bayern is set to expire in the summer, opening the door for a Premier League club, with Liverpool touted as a potential destination.
Sane has had a middling campaign at Allianz Arena, with a return of 11 goals and five assists in 28 Bundesliga appearances for Vincent Kompany’s side.
The 29-year-old’s contract saga, which appeared resolved just weeks ago, now threatens to destabilise Bayern’s summer plans while offering Arne Slot’s Reds an unexpected opportunity to strengthen their attack.
Sane abruptly terminated his relationship with longtime agent Christian Schmid last week, aligning instead with Pini Zahavi, the Israeli super agent notorious for securing lucrative deals for clients.
Bayern have less than favorable memories with Zahavi with Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness calling the Israeli a “piranha,” during the failed contract extension negotiations with David Alaba, while Robert Lewandowski left Munich under pressure from Zahavi.
This tactical move came despite Bayern sporting director Max Eberl having verbally agreed to a three-year extension through 2028 that would slash Sane’s annual earnings from €20 million to €10 million fixed plus €5 million in bonuses.
Bayern Munich’s front office has now spoken about Sane’s decision to change agents and how that affects the club’s chances of keeping him.
“Leroy is having a good season,” the club’s CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, said.
“Zahavi is an experienced agent, not always easy to negotiate with.
Max Eberl is doing an excellent job with Christoph Freund,” Dreesen told Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch.”
President Herbert Hainer is not sweating it yet, either — at least not publicly.
“I don’t know his motives.
Leroy has said often enough that he wants to stay,” Hainer said.
While Liverpool would always welcome a player of Sane’s calibre on a free transfer, it seems unlikely that his wage demands would fit into the wage structure at Anfield.
